Probably a good problem to have. If he has a good year, it's a tough decision. If he doesn't, then you've got a guy on your roster wasting a space who most likely won't be a target for Las Vegas. I think having to make a tough decision is the best case.

I kinda like having this potential problem ...if at the end of the year the flames have a tough choice than that means two of shink, poirier, ferland had really good years and probably means the flames made the playoffs as top line scoring and D scoring is no issue

I'd agree with that. Besides, so much can happen between now and the expansion draft. Poirier can come back to life and regain his prominence as a prospect (which I expect, by the way). Shink could come to camp thinking he's got it and not put forth the proper effort. Some surprise could come out. Brouwer could poop the bed in yeea one making BT consider not protecting him.

It's a long way away.

What will hurt Shink is his size, no question on his skillset.

I think JJ will be the one to go, even if shink puts up around 30 points I'd still see JJ getting picked. And if he puts up around 40 then we protect him over ferland, and again JJ over ferland.

By the season after the draft hopefully one or two of our prospects are ready to stick with the flames ...Haven't looked at the free agency list yet but if JJ goes then I would like them to aquire a vet to play with one of the kids and move gio to play with the other ...put dougie and Brodie together as that seems like something that will happen eventually and let the two kids learn from gio and another vet

Yeah maybe this lights a fire under Poirier and Shink knowing they potentially can end up in Vegas. That's assuming they both want to stay with the Flames Org. Joki is still the one to go at this point. I guess if Nak re-signs he could also be the one to get snagged. But we need those 2 wiener eaters to sign first

It does in our division though, especially in the event any of the ALB BC teams make the playoffs.

Wow this basically means the Islanders have a problem (with Pulock needing protection)

By doing so, youre suggesting that the Flames would protect 8 skaters over 7 fwd's and 3 D. That would expose a few more fwd's than just Ferland.

If JJ puts up those kinds of #'s, I think you now have to look at making a trade of either JJ or even Gio, by the deadline so we don't lose that kind of asset for nothing. It's also why I believe it's imperative that we get Wotherspoon signed. He's another young guy that could likely fill JJ's shoes or even surpass him this year making him the target for Vegas.

Agreed. Barring a terrible season by him, I'm sure Pulock would be snagged in expansion.

I don't think Brouwer is a lock to be on there, if he has a down season BT might take two younger guys instead of a guy who will be 33.

Pretty sure the isles would protect him and deal either Strome, Lee or Nelson because one of them will have to be left exposed to keep Pulock. Isles are much deeper prospect wise up front then on the back end. I can see them trading one of those forwards for picks or prospects who wouldn't need to be protected IMO

Doubtful, wouldn't be surprised to see them deal a forward and Calvin de Haan to make sure they don't lose anyone for free.

I think he was saying that if Shink puts up 40 pts we would protect him instead of Ferland. He then meant that JJ would be chosen by vegas over Ferland, not that we would protect Ferland and JJ.

It's entirely possible that the reason Brouwer got the term and $ he did was because of the distinct chance of him being left unprotected and claimed by Vegas. Exposing him may be part of the plan. At the very least, both sides of that negotiation had to be well aware of this potential scenario.

Well here is hoping Ferland has a bounce back season.

I agree with OG. Rest in peace JJ. I was even going to try how to pronounce his name but now he is dead to me.

I'm not suggesting they will pick 8 skaters at all? JJ will be the one most likely to be picked because we are only protecting 3 d.
